SMTE
Make complex maritime information clearer while preserving its technical meaning.
About Simplified Maritime Training English
SMTE was created to address a common problem in maritime education and training. Maritime knowledge is often presented in complex language, long sentences and densely written technical documents. This can make important information unnecessarily difficult to understand—particularly for people studying or working in a second language. SMTE makes that information clearer while preserving its technical meaning.
The problem is not always the subject
Maritime subjects are naturally technical. However, the language used to explain them can make them more difficult than necessary. Students and seafarers may understand the practical operation but struggle with the way the written material is presented. They may also spend time decoding the language before they can begin learning the subject. SMTE separates unnecessary language difficulty from genuine technical complexity.
The SMTE approach
SMTE:
- Preserves the meaning of the source material
- Uses shorter, more focused sentences
- Presents one main idea at a time
- Explains technical and unfamiliar terms
- Improves the order and structure of information
- Supports teaching, learning and revision
Built on the Simplicate It capability
Simplicate It is a capability that preserves the original meaning while making complex information easier to understand. SMTE is the first specialist application of that capability. It applies the Simplicate It method to maritime education, training and professional information.
Our purpose
Our purpose is to help people understand the knowledge they need to study, work safely and develop professionally within the maritime industry. We believe that specialist knowledge should remain accurate without being unnecessarily difficult to read.
